Prima oara in 2003 un pusti german a reusit sa obtina acces la anumite servere Valve, reusind sa downloadeze printre altele codul sursa de la jocul Half Life 2, pagubele estimate la vremea respectiva fiind de cateva sute de milioane de dolari (insa probabil s-a exagerat pentru vanzarile n-au fost afectate prea mult de acest incident). Cei care sunt interesati de acest subiect pot citi un interviu interesant cu Axel Gembe http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... -2-article , in care povesteste cum a reusit sa acceseze serverele Valve, cum era sa fie pacalit de Valve ca sa fie arestat de FBI, cum a fost arestat de politia din Germania etc...
De aceasta data insa se pare ca Valve n-a mai scapat asa ieftin. Timp de cateva zile forumul Steam a fost oprit cu mesajul clasic "The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated.", insa acest lucru dupa ce au aparut anunturi legate de un site dedicat cheaterilor si mesaje similare scrise folosind contul unui angajat Valve.
Daca initial se putea presupune ca cei care au facut asta de fapt au obtinut parola pentru un cont pe forum cu drepturi de administrare, se pare ca in realitate lucrurile sunt mult mai grave, Valve declarand ca a fost compromisa cel putin o baza de date cu informatii despre conturi Steam (inclusiv parolele criptate), informatii despre cardurile de credit, adresele celor care au cumparat jocuri etc...
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:
Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began
investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.
We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.
We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.
While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.
We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.
We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

Cei care vor sa nu aiba probleme ar trebui sa-si schimbe parola pentru contul Steam, mai ales daca nu au Steam Guard activat sau daca folosesc aceasi parola si pentru contul de mail. Chiar daca teoretic parolele nu sunt pastrate in clar in baza de date, orice parola simpla poata fi aflata destul de usor folosind un dictionar si incercari repetate.
De asemenea daca ati cumparat jocuri folosind cardul de credit atunci neaparat trebuie sa verificati extrasele in perioada urmatoare pentru a detecta cat mai repede orice tranzactie neautorizata.
